Guide · Medical Center area
Starting a new position, rotation or research appointment near the Texas Medical Center? This guide covers neighborhoods, commuting, parking and routines for professionals who are living nearby for a few months.

Professionals working in the Medical Center area often live in a handful of nearby pockets: along Holcombe Boulevard and Kirby Drive, near Hermann Park and the Museum District, along Almeda Road, or west toward Rice Village and West University. Each has trade-offs. Closer-in buildings shorten the commute, while West University and Rice Village offer a quieter residential feel with restaurants nearby.
Campus parking can be limited and expensive, so many people compare their employer's parking and shuttle options, the METRORail Red Line through the Medical Center, and cycling before choosing where to live. SH-288, the South Loop and US-59/I-69 carry most drivers. Shift start times matter: an early start can mean a very different drive from a 9 a.m. commute.
A furnished apartment with a full kitchen makes it easier to cook ahead during demanding weeks, and an in-unit washer and dryer saves time between shifts. Hermann Park is close for runs and walks, and Rice Village and Kirby Drive have late-opening restaurants and groceries.
We place guests at communities such as Vantage Medical Center, Maroneal and Villas at Hermann Park. Compare all of them on our Medical Center area furnished apartments page.
