Temporary Housing During Home Repairs in Houston: A Practical Guide
When a pipe bursts in a freeze, a storm pushes water under the door or a contractor says the kitchen floor has to come up, the next question is always the same: where do we live while the house gets fixed? Houston families asked it after Hurricane Harvey in 2017, Winter Storm Uri in 2021 and the derecho and Hurricane Beryl in 2024. Plenty of people ask it in an ordinary year too, after a kitchen fire, a slab leak or a remodel that grew bigger than planned.
Houston Corporate Housing has arranged furnished apartments in Houston since 2014. This guide covers how to plan temporary housing during home repairs: what to ask your insurance company, how to pick an area that keeps school and work routines in place, and what a furnished apartment gives you that a hotel room doesn't.

Hotel room or furnished apartment while your house is repaired?
A hotel makes sense for the first night or two after an emergency. After that, hotel life gets expensive in ways that are easy to miss: every meal eaten out, clothes washed at a laundromat, kids and pets sharing one room, and packing up again each time the stay is extended.
Repairs rarely finish on the first estimate. Wet drywall has to dry before it can be replaced, materials get back-ordered, and permits and inspections take their own time. A furnished apartment is built for that kind of open-ended stay. You get bedrooms with doors, a living room, a full kitchen and an in-unit washer and dryer, so the household can run close to normal while the crews work. Questions to ask your insurance company first
If the damage is covered by a homeowners or renters policy, your temporary housing may be covered too. Many policies include additional living expenses (ALE), sometimes called loss of use coverage, which can pay the extra cost of living somewhere else while your home can't be lived in. Every policy is different, so call your adjuster before you book and ask:
Does my policy include additional living expenses, and is my home considered unlivable for this claim?
What is the limit, in dollars and in time, and does it cover a furnished apartment as well as a hotel?
Will you pay the housing provider directly, or do I pay and send receipts for reimbursement?
What paperwork do you need from the housing provider: a written quote, an agreement or invoices?
Flood damage works differently. Standard homeowners policies don't cover flooding, and the National Flood Insurance Program says its policies don't pay for temporary housing or additional living expenses. After a presidential disaster declaration, FEMA assistance may help eligible households with rent or lodging, so apply at DisasterAssistance.gov and keep your claim numbers handy.
Whatever your coverage, keep every receipt and note the dates you were out of the house. When you contact us, we can put the quote in writing with the address, dates and what's included, so you have something clear to send your adjuster. We can also bill your insurance company or adjuster directly, so let us know who should receive the invoices.
Pick an area that keeps your routine
The best temporary home is usually the one closest to the life you already have: the kids' school, your office and the house itself, since you'll be meeting contractors and adjusters there. Houston is spread out, and the wrong pick can add a long drive each way on the West Loop or I-10. A few common pairings:
Bellaire, West University and Meyerland: our furnished apartments near Greenway Plaza on Richmond Avenue and our Galleria and Uptown furnished apartments are a short drive away.
Memorial, Spring Branch and the west side: SYNC CityCentre and Domain at CityCentre, near I-10 and Beltway 8, keep you close to home. See our furnished apartments near the Energy Corridor.
The Heights, Montrose and the Inner Loop: Midtown furnished apartments and Downtown furnished apartments keep you a short drive from home.

What's ready on move-in day
After a loss, nobody wants another setup project. Our furnished apartments come ready to live in:
Furniture throughout, including bedroom sets, living room seating and a dining table.
A full kitchen, so you can cook at home instead of eating out every night.
Utilities and Wi-Fi included, with no accounts to open or transfer.
An in-unit washer and dryer, which helps when you're also cleaning up things from the house.
Free parking in a shared gated garage.
Pool and fitness access for month-to-month guests.
Non-aggressive pets are allowed, so the family dog can come along instead of spending weeks in a kennel. Repairs don't keep office hours, so local support is available 24/7. For the full list and what to confirm before booking, read what's included in a Houston furnished apartment.
Planning around an uncertain repair timeline
Contractors give estimates, not promises. A water-damage job can stretch while walls dry out and the insurer approves each stage, and a remodel can uncover old plumbing or foundation work. Book for your best estimate, then tell us as soon as the timeline moves. Month-to-month furnished apartments let the stay follow the real repair schedule, subject to availability, and our short-term furnished apartments in Houston suit quicker jobs like new flooring or a kitchen refresh.
A few habits help. Ask your contractor for a written schedule with milestones, check progress at the house every week, and let us know early if you think you'll need more time, so we can plan around your dates.
Moving out of a damaged home: a short checklist
Photograph the damage and your belongings before anything is moved, for the claim.
Pack medications, documents, chargers, school things and a week of clothes. The rest can stay or go to storage.
Forward your mail and give your temporary address to the school and your employer.
Give your contractor and adjuster your phone number and the best times to meet at the house.
Keep a simple log of dates, receipts and every conversation with your insurer.
