Every restaurant here was checked against its own website or a current listing in late September 2026. Each one was open when we checked, and we list its address. Hours change, so treat the notes as a starting point and confirm before you head out. The areas match where our furnished apartments are. Each section ends with a grocery store in that part of town, so you can stock the kitchen on your first day.
Downtown and the East End
Downtown is at its best around Discovery Green and the old Warehouse District. Head east of the freeway for the East End's long-standing Mexican-American kitchens.
Xochi (1777 Walker St, Suite A, across from Discovery Green). Chef Hugo Ortega's Oaxacan menu is built around moles, masa and seafood. It serves lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday and brunch on Sunday.
Theodore Rex (1302 Nance St, Warehouse District). A small, relaxed fine-dining room with a French touch and a menu that follows local ingredients. Dinner only, on limited nights, so reserve ahead.
The Original Ninfa's on Navigation (2704 Navigation Blvd). The East End restaurant where Mama Ninfa Laurenzo started serving tacos al carbon in 1973. It's still the place for fajitas, and weekend brunch is popular.
Nancy's Hustle (2704 Polk St). A lively East End bistro with a menu that changes often, from "Nancy cakes" to a burger on a brioche English muffin. It's open for dinner every day, and reservations are recommended.

Midtown and Montrose
Midtown and neighboring Montrose pack a lot of variety into a small area, from breakfast institutions to barbecue that runs from morning to night.
The Breakfast Klub (3711 Travis St, Midtown). A Midtown breakfast and lunch spot serving Southern-style plates. It opens early and closes at 2 p.m., so go in the morning.
The Pit Room (1201 Richmond Ave, Montrose). Texas barbecue with a peppery, smoky style, plus breakfast tacos in the morning. It's open seven days a week.
Uchi (904 Westheimer Rd, Suite A). Contemporary Japanese cooking, with sushi, seasonal tastings and a daily happy hour. It's open for dinner every night.
Hugo's (1600 Westheimer Rd). Mexican cooking on Westheimer Road, with Sunday brunch. It's closed Mondays.
The Burger Joint (2703 Montrose Blvd). Straightforward burgers and shakes, open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Galleria and Uptown
The Galleria and Post Oak Boulevard lean toward polished dinners, which suits business meals and celebrations.
Pappas Bros. Steakhouse, Galleria (5839 Westheimer Rd). A classic steakhouse with prime beef dry-aged in-house and a deep wine list. It's open for dinner and closed Sundays.
Ninfa's Uptown (1700 Post Oak Blvd, Suite 1-190). The Uptown location of The Original Ninfa's, with the same fajitas and Tex-Mex as the East End original.

Greenway Plaza is an office district, so its best food is often at lunch. Upper Kirby, just north, adds long-running local restaurants.

Goode Company Seafood, Westpark (2621 Westpark Dr). Gulf Coast seafood in a restaurant that's half railroad car. It's open daily for lunch and dinner.
