Temporary Housing Between Homes in Houston: A Planning Guide
Your house sold faster than expected. The builder pushed your closing back a month. Or you're moving to Houston and don't want to buy a home in a city you've only seen on a map. In each case you need somewhere to live for a while, and you'd rather not sign a 12-month lease or live out of a hotel room with a family and a dog.
We've been placing people in furnished apartments in Houston since 2014, and stays between homes are some of the most common we arrange. This guide covers the situations that lead to a gap, how to plan for a timeline you don't control, where to stay while you house hunt, and what to sort out before the movers come.
When you need housing between homes
Your home sold before the next one closes
Buyers often want to close quickly, and sellers often accept to keep the deal together. That can leave you with a sale date weeks before you can move into your next home. A furnished apartment lets you hand over the keys on time and send most of your belongings to storage.
Your new build is running late
New construction around Houston can slip for weather, inspections or materials. Builders tend to give an estimated completion window rather than a fixed date, so plan for the window and keep your options open to extend.
You're relocating and want to know the city before you buy
Houston is large, and neighborhoods that look close on a map can be a long drive apart at rush hour. Renting furnished for a few months lets you drive your actual commute, visit schools and weekend spots, and buy with confidence. Our neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to where to stay is a good place to start.
Your lease ends before the next place is ready
Lease dates rarely line up perfectly. A furnished stay covers the gap without a second set of utility accounts or a rushed move into the wrong apartment.
How long should you plan for?
Start from the date you're sure of, usually your sale or move-out date, and the best estimate for the next home. Then add some cushion, because the second date is the one that moves. Closings can slip over appraisals, financing or title issues, and new builds can slip by weeks.
Book for your best estimate rather than the worst case, and choose an arrangement that can be extended. Our month-to-month furnished apartments are built for this: you extend as your plans change, subject to availability. Tell us as soon as your closing date moves, so we can plan around your new dates.
Where to stay while you house hunt in Houston
The best base is usually close to where you'll work, or central enough to tour several areas without spending your weekends on the freeway. We pick the best buildings in the best locations, and these are the areas people between homes ask about most. You can compare every building by area before you call.
Galleria and Uptown
Central to the west side, with shopping, dining and quick access to I-610 and Westpark Tollway. It's a practical base if you're touring Bellaire, Memorial, Tanglewood or the suburbs to the southwest. See our Galleria and Uptown furnished apartments, including Galleria Parc (formerly Century Galleria Lofts).
CityCentre and Memorial City
Good for families looking at west Houston, Katy or the Energy Corridor, with walkable shops and restaurants at CityCentre and I-10 nearby. Options include SYNC CityCentre (formerly Alexan City Centre) and Domain at CityCentre; see the CityCentre and Memorial City hub.
Greenway Plaza and Upper Kirby
One of the most central spots in the city, between the Galleria, Downtown and the inner-loop neighborhoods. It works well if you haven't decided between inside and outside the loop. Browse furnished apartments near Greenway Plaza.
Downtown and Midtown
A fit if you'll work Downtown or want to try inner-city living before buying a townhome or condo. METRORail connects Downtown, Midtown and the Museum District. See furnished apartments in Downtown Houston.
What a furnished apartment covers, so the rest can go to storage
The point of a furnished stay between homes is that you only move what you need for the next few weeks or months. Our apartments come ready to live in:
Furniture, a made bed, towels and linens
A full kitchen with cookware and dishes, so you're not eating out every night
An in-unit washer and dryer
Utilities and Wi-Fi included, so there are no extra accounts to open and close
Free parking
That makes it simpler to pack. Suitcases, work gear, kids' school things and a few comforts from home are usually enough.
A between-homes checklist
Most of the stress in a gap comes from paperwork and logistics, not the apartment. Work through these before moving day:
Ask your mover about storage-in-transit, or book a storage unit near your next home, so the final delivery is short.
Set up mail forwarding to the furnished apartment. USPS offers temporary forwarding for a set period, which avoids changing your address twice.
If you're coming from another state, note the Texas deadlines: new residents have 90 days to get a Texas driver license and a shorter window to register an out-of-state vehicle, so check the Texas DMV early.
Ask your school district what proof of residence it accepts, especially if your children will start school before the purchase closes.
Keep copies of your sale contract, the next closing date and your lender's contact details somewhere you can reach them from your phone.
Tell us about pets, the number of people staying and any parking needs when you inquire, so we can match the right building.
Common questions about stays between homes
What if my closing date moves?
It happens often. Let us know as soon as you have a new date, and we'll work to extend your stay in the same apartment, subject to availability. Early notice gives the most options.
Can my employer pay for it?
Yes. If the stay is part of a relocation package, we can bill the company directly and send the paperwork HR needs. Our guide to how booking works walks through the steps from inquiry to move-in.
Can I see where I'm staying before I book?
Each building page shows photos and the location, and we're happy to answer questions about the apartment, parking and the neighborhood before you commit.
Plan your stay between homes
Send us your current neighborhood, the area you're house hunting in, how many people and pets are coming, your move-out date and your best estimate for the next closing. We'll reply with furnished apartments in Houston that fit and a written quote.
